The island is reached only on foot, over a hanging bridge that sways gently above the Kemijoki. On the far side there is no reception and no crowd, just the suites spread among the trees, each with its own door opening to the open Arctic air. In summer the water mirrors a sun that never quite sets; in winter the river freezes and the whole sky fills with colour.
The suites
Inside, the rooms are calm and individual. High ceilings rise to a reading nook or a mezzanine with its own small library, and low windows frame the river and the birches beyond. Materials are honest and tactile, painted timber, sisal, wool and linen, and every suite carries live plants, local paintings and a coffee set for the slow mornings before breakfast.
The table by the fire
Dinner is served in Vuo, a restaurant shaped like a traditional Lappish kota and warmed by an open fire at its centre. Breakfast and a surprise set menu are included each day, built from Lappish ingredients and cooked with quiet precision. Candlelight, curved timber walls and the hush of the river make the long northern evening feel like the point of the whole journey.

The location of the property was picturesque and breathtaking.
The sauna is a wonderful and we did not have to share with anybody and was able to access it at anytime we wanted by just notifying the hotel via WhatsApp.

Everything was perfect in every way. We arrived late in the evening and they had our cabin nicely warmed up ready for our arrival. The staff were all really friendly where nothing was an issue. They went above and beyond.

Dinner at Vuo
Breakfast and dinner are folded into every stay, served at Vuo on what the island calls Lappish soul food — whatever the kitchen has, done plainly. It's the one fixed point in an otherwise open day.
The birch-bark boat at the shore
Late morning brings a small ritual at the water's edge: a piece of birch bark folded into a boat and set into the current, a private thought going with it. It takes minutes, and there's no ceremony beyond the folding.
Stay up for the white night
In Arctic Summer the sun barely sets. Sit longer than planned by the river, or take the hammock instead of the bed, and watch the light hold rather than fade — the island calls it a coolcation, cooler and quieter than most of Europe through summer.
