Rooms in the treetops

The treehouse rooms sit out among the crowns of the forest. Each opens fully onto a broad hardwood deck where a freestanding tub and a pair of chairs look straight into the canopy. Inside, a king bed faces the trees through floor-to-ceiling glass, the timber ceiling rising to a peak overhead. Waking here means waking to leaves, cloud and the calls of unseen birds.

A table over the sea

Meals are served on an open terrace pinned to the edge of the ridge, the whole coastline laid out beyond the glass rail — on a clear day the sandbar of the Whale's Tail draws its long line into the water. The kitchen leans on what the surrounding farms and forest give it, and dinner tends to run late as the light turns gold and then pink over the Pacific.

The waterfall trail

A trail off the grounds climbs to a waterfall the house keeps to itself, no van or guide required. Go before nine, while the canopy is still cool, and listen for howler monkeys — audible from up to three miles off — marking the way.

Breakfast made to order

Breakfast is a-la-carte and included with every room, so it's cooked once you order it rather than held under a lamp. Take it on the deck; nobody minds if you're still there at ten.

The Whale's Tail by shuttle

Marino Ballena's sandbar — the Whale's Tail visible from the treehouses — is a short ride on the hotel's own daily beach shuttle, included with every stay. Time it for low tide, when the sandbar clears fully, then come back up to the pool at the clubhouse.

Pick your treehouse

Treehouse Tucan faces west and catches the sunset from a hanging loveseat on the deck. Treehouse Tamandua looks straight across virgin rainforest to the ocean, though it asks a short, inclined walk over gravel and stairs to reach. Treehouse Mono Congo gets cross-breezes through openings on all four sides and rarely needs the air conditioning on.
