Nine lodges, nine pools
Every apartment has its own swimming pool and its own solarium, with sun loungers, an outdoor shower and a portico with a table and chairs. There is no communal deck to get to first, and no timetable for the water — the pool outside your door is yours for the week. One of the nine has been laid out specifically so that a guest using a wheelchair can move through it and use it independently.
Doing it yourself
This is a self-catering house rather than a hotel: no restaurant, no bar, no one at a desk all night. Water, electricity and private parking come with the lodge, a welcome breakfast is laid on when you arrive, and the rooms are tidied from the third day onward, Sundays excepted. Check-in runs from late afternoon to half past seven, a later arrival is charged as an extra, and a deposit is taken at the door — worth knowing if your flight into Catania lands in the evening.
Etna behind, sea below
The setting is working countryside on the eastern flank of Etna, citrus and avocado rather than a manicured resort garden, and the coast road is a short drive downhill. That position is the argument for the place: the black rock coves of the Riviera dei Ciclopi are a quarter of an hour south, Catania and Taormina each about half an hour in opposite directions, and the volcano's southern slopes a morning's outing.
