Each room is its own composition in white — a raised plaster bed platform, a headboard of driftwood or hand-woven cane, floors of cream marble that stay cool underfoot. Bamboo ceilings lift into little domes, crochet throws soften the beds, and tall doors fold back so the garden and the sea breeze come straight in. Nothing in the room competes with the light.
Above the surf coast
The hillside setting is the whole point. From the window seats and terraces the land falls away over the Bukit's rooftops and palms to the ocean beyond, close enough to read the swell before you paddle out. Padang Padang, Bingin and Impossibles are only minutes down the lane, and the evenings arrive warm and unhurried with the sea going gold beneath the frangipani.
Gravity Eco Hotel was another dreamy experience in Bali. The atmosphere was peaceful, intimate, and beautifully designed, with one of the best views I experienced during my trip.

Lovely location, beautiful views, excellent breakfast and lovely staff. I had a wasp building a his own small ‘room’ in my bathroom and the staff immediately removed it. It is simply a wonderful place.

The lounge's Balinese gazebo, an open-air day bed, catches the last of the sun before the outdoor fireplace takes over after dark. Round it off with happy hour at the bar, or a swim in the infinity pool while the light is still gold.
Babi guling, if you find it
The Bukit's warungs still turn out Bali's suckling-pig banquet, babi guling, on the nights they run a Balinese feast; most days it's nasi goreng or mie goreng with a fried egg on top, and gado-gado if you want it cold. Vegetarian versions are the norm here, not a special request.
Sunset Kecak at Uluwatu Temple
The temple at the peninsula's tip runs its Kecak fire dance at sunset, the Bukit's one fixed appointment; go early for a cliff-edge seat and arrange the ride back through the hotel, since these roads by scooter after dark are not the place to test yourself. Back in time for the fireplace.
Time the wet season right
From September to February expect one loud downpour most afternoons, generally under an hour, the kind worth booking in as the nap you were going to take anyway. The rest of the year runs dry and warm with a sea breeze, and the swell along Uluwatu, Bingin and Padang Padang keeps going regardless.
